GEJ SUSPENDS ALL RESIDENT DOCTORS

The President of the federal republic of Nigeria has ordered the immediate Suspension of the resident doctors. This was made known to the doctors through a circular from the Ministry of Health. According to the circular, the suspension is expected to aid the Government  appraise the challenges of the health Sector.

This suspension comes at a time when the health workers are needed to contain the spread of the Deadly Ebola Virus. There has been recent complaint of neglect of the Ebola Victims in the isolation wards. The question is, if all resident doctors are suspended who will care for the sick, will the available doctors be sufficient to handle the health sector or will health care be in the hands of few expatriate doctors?

EBOLA: NURSE JUSTINA DIES OF THE DEADLY EBOLA VIRUS

Nurse Justina Obi Ejelonu, (pictured above) who attended to late Liberian Patrick Sawyer while he was ill at the First Consultant hospital Obalende in Lagos, has died.
Ms. Ejelonu who until her demise today had been kept in a quarantine facility in Lagos. Justina was 25years old at the time of death. May her Gentle soul rest in peace..Amen

Meanwhile, an experimental drug "Nanosilver" developed by a Nigerian in diaspora for the treatment of Ebola is expected to arrive the country today, the Minister for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.

The drug, “Nanosilver”, has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an experimental treatment ethical in the case of the Ebola epidemic. The Federal Govt yesterday approved the experimental drugs as a treatment for the deadly virus.

I hope that the drug works for the affected victims of Ebola and that the Death of Justina and other health workers who passed-on will not be in Vain.

CBN RE-INTRODUCES THE ATM CHARGES AGAIN, CUSTOMERS TO PAY N65

Less than One year after the Automated Teller Machine(ATM) fee was scrapped by the Sanusi regime, the Central Bank Nigeria (CBN) has instantly re-introduced the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) fee it scrapped in December, 2013. The apex bank said from September 1, customers will commence payment of N65 as against the N100 fee charged previously.
The CBN Director, Banking & Payments System Department, ‘Dipo Fatokun, who made this known in a circular, the re-introduction of Remote-on-us ATM cash withdrawal fee of N65per transaction, is to cover the remuneration of the switches, ATM monitors and fit-notes processing by acquiring banks.

He explained that the new charge shall apply as from the fourth transaction in another bank’s ATM. Continue to Read below....

EBOLA: 21 SUSPECTED CASES IN ENUGU STATE

A nurse in Lagos who had contact with the Liberian Man Patrick Sawyer has fled quarantine in Lagos to Enugu to be with her Family.
Her decision  has affected another 20 people including her husband. All 20 people had primary contacts with the nurse and all are under surveillance in Enugu state.

According to Channels report, Three people have so far died from the disease in Nigeria; Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American businessman who collapsed in Lagos, an attending nurse, and an ECOWAS staffer who helped Sawyer while he was in Lagos.

According to Mr Maku, 198 Nigerians have been traced to have contacted the virus. While 177 are in Lagos, 21 persons in Enugu are being watched.

The FEC devoted this week’s meeting to the efforts being made to combat the Ebola Virus which entered Nigeria some 23 days ago and had been declared a National Emergency.

Young Indian women who are acid attack survivors have spent years hiding their faces but now, they have cast off their shame and pain to appear with smiling faces in a new photoshoot by Rahul Saharan.

Rupa, Rita, Laximi (right to left) and have all been the victims of horrendous acid attacks. Rupa, who has just started her own clothing collection, called Rupa Designs, designed the clothes used for the photoshoot.

Rupa, 22, is trying to put the past behind her and look to a brighter future. She says;

'I always wanted to be a designer but after the attack there was a pause in my life. I was so insecure and embarrassed by my scars I used to cover my face with a scarf. I always hung onto my dream but I never knew that one day it would be possible and I would be launching my own label.'These young women are trying to show their attackers they will no longer hide their faces and that they deserve to live a life of dignity.

EBOLA: ZMAPP, EBOLA EXPERIMENTAL DRUG TO BE GIVEN TO LIBERIA

The White house has decided to release the ZMapp experimental drug for Ebola to Liberia. The White House and Food and Drug Administration approved the Liberian request for the drug to be made available to them.
The government of Liberia says that sample doses of the experimental Ebola drug ZMapp will be sent there to treat doctors who have contracted the deadly virus.

Liberia identified itself as the recipient of the drug after the company that makes ZMapp said earlier that its supply was exhausted after fulfilling the request of a West African country, which it did not name.

The delivery of the ZMapp to Liberia follows a request made on Friday from Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to President Barack Obama.

The sample doses will be brought to Liberia by a U.S. government representative this week, the Liberian government said

EBOLA: ANOTHER NURSE IN LAGOS TESTS POSITIVE TO EBOLA

Another Lagos nurse has tested positive to the Ebola Virus Disease(EVD). 

According to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Monday, 11th August, he said that the newly married nurse was among those that had direct contact with the late Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, who imported the disease to Nigeria .

Prof. Chukwu also added that the husband of the nurse was also among the 177 people who had now been placed under surveillance.
He added that, so far, nine have developed EVD,thus bringing the total number of cases in Nigeria to 10.

According to him, two people, that is the Liberian and the nurse are dead while eight are alive and currently on treatment.
The minister also said the infection of the virus had so far been restricted to Lagos as it had not spread to other parts of the country.

EBOLA VIRUS: NIGERIANS QUARANTINED IN CANADA AND HONG KONG AFTER SHOWING SYMPTOMS

West-African countries are on the radar of every foreign country they go to, whether sick or healthy.
A patient with flu-like symptoms who recently visited Nigeria was put into isolation at an Ontario hospital but later tested negative for the deadly Ebola virus.

The man had complained of fever, headache, muscle pain and malaise and was held in isolation at Brampton Civic Hospital which instituted heightened infection-control procedures after the patient was admitted.

Ontario's Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Eric Hoskins confirmed that the man, who recently travelled to Canada from Nigeria, is now "doing well" and anticipated to have a "full and speedy recovery."

Hoskins said in a release, posted to the Ontario ministry's website:

"I can now confirm a recent case that underwent testing at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg was found to test negative for Ebola virus disease."
Meanwhile another Nigerian man was also quarantined in Hong Kong after he showed Ebola-like symptoms during a trip to the city. The man who arrived Hong Kong from Lagos on Thursday August 7th via Dubai, was isolated in a hospital after severe vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea. He later tested negative for Ebola.

In a statement released today, the Southern Chinese city government said the 32 year old man, whose name was not given, had "tested negative for Ebola virus upon preliminary laboratory testing".

"In the past one month ... he had no contact history with sick persons or animals and did not visit health-are facilities. He is currently in stable condition."
Two weeks ago, the Hong Kong government said it would quarantine as a precaution all people from Ebola-infected areas who showed any symptom of the disease.

EBOLA: CATHOLIC AND ANGLICAN CHURCHES SUSPENDS 'SIGN OF PEACE'

As the deadly Ebola Virus spreads, the orthodox churches are cutting out some of their old traditions during church services to avoid the spread of the disease among members.
The Nigeria Catholic churches in Lagos have suspended the 'sign of peace' where the congregations shake hands during mass. While the Anglican churches have suspended 'sign of peace' handshakes during communion due to the spread of Ebola.

The Archbishop of Lagos Adewale Martins released a statement on Sunday saying that while the handshakes have been suspended, Catholic priests should continue the traditional hand to mouth method of given Holy Communion for now, but asked the priest to make sure their hands don't touch the tongues of the recipient. He also said Holy Water bowls usually placed at the entrance of churches should be discontinued to contain the spread of the virus.

In the same vein, the Primate of the Church Of Nigeria Anglican Communion the Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh suspended shaking of hands during the exchange of the peace. He also suspended the age long mouth method of administering communion. He said this is aimed at preventing the spread of the disease through physical contact.

GHANA RECORDS FIRST EBOLA VICTIM

Ghana may have recorded its first case of Ebola Virus. According to reports from Ghana,
on Friday afternoon, a Burkinabe man(a citizen of Burkina Faso) who had general symptoms of Ebola including fever, nose and ear bleeding, was taken to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital dead on arrival. The man was brought through the border from Burkina to Ghana by his relatives who wanted proper medical care for him but he died on the way.

The Medical Director at the Hospital, Dr Joseph Yaw Manu, confirmed to StarrFMonline.com that the man had died at the time he was brought in, saying: “…What scared me most as a Medical Doctor is that he was bleeding from his ears and nose–symptoms of Ebola.”

On Dr Manu’s orders, blood samples from the deceased have been taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana for testing. If positive, this would be Ghana’s first confirmed case of the virus, which has killed at least 961 people in the West African sub-region out of 1,779 total cases. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are among the hardest hit countries.

EBOLA FEAR: TWO PEOPLE FEARED DEAD, 20 OTHERS HOSPITALIZED OVER EXCESSIVE USE OF SALT

According to This Day news, at least two persons have been feared killed and 20 others hospitalised in various hospitals in Plateau State after consuming excessive quantity of salt and bitter kola to prevent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) attack.

The two, according to a source in Shendam who spoke with our reporter on phone, were rushed to the hospital by their family members after they suddenly collapsed in the morning, having consumed too much of salt over night. They later died of high blood pressure in the hospitals.

According to medical personnel in the hospitals where the other patients are currently taking treatment in Jos, some developed ulcer, while others stool profusely, having consumed the table salt in excess.

LAGOS STATE PREPARES ISOLATION WARDS FOR EBOLA VICTIMS

The Lagos State government has taken imminent steps to build an isolation ward for the Ebola victims in Lagos state.The isolation ward is situated at the back of the hospital and are tents under which patients are camped and fenced in with planks.

The isolation centre was built to help contain the situation and reduce possible spread of the disease.

Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, Commissioners for Health, Dr Jide Idris, and Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr Yewande Adeshina visited the place today and said the facility is ready for use.

GEJ DECLARES NATIONAL EMERGENCY ON EBOLA, APPROVES N1.9BILLION INTERVENTION FUND

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a National Emergency, to aid in the control and containment of the Ebola Virus. Mr president also ordered the release of N1.9billion special intervention fund to aid the health workers in Battling the disease. Read full press Statement below-

Accordingly, the President has directed the Federal Ministry of Health to work in collaboration with the State Ministries of Health, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to ensure that all possible steps are taken to effectively contain the threat of the Ebola virus in line with international protocols and best practices.

President Jonathan also approved a Special Intervention Plan and the immediate release of N1. 9 billion for its implementation, to further strengthen on-going steps to contain the virus such as the establishment of additional isolation centres, case management, contact tracing, deployment of additional personnel, screening at borders, and the procurement of required items and facilities.
The President commends the vigilance of aviation and health authorities in Lagos who identified and isolated the index case in Nigeria, the late Patrick Sawyer, an American-Liberian who flew into the country. CONTINUE...
