PRESIDENCY REJECTS BOKO HARAM SWAP OFFER

President-Goodluck-Jonathan

The presidency has insisted that there will be no "Trade by Barter" process with the boko haram sect. The Presidency said he has no intentions of freeing  the boko haram prisoners nor trading them with the missing girls. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, who spoke in an interview said that the sect are faceless and it will be difficult to negotiate with them.

“While the Chibok issue has brought up the matter of whether the government is going to hold dialogue or whether the government is going to buy back the girls, I don’t see government planning to engage in any action that amounts to trade by barter, or treatment of the girls as items of merchandise, or anything that remotely over-privileges crime against humanity.

“In this kind of asymmetrical warfare, even dialogue can be difficult because the enemy is faceless.
“Nonetheless, what government has said is that it has always adopted all options in dealing with the security challenge and there are already ongoing processes and standing committees. Government has said clearly, however that any Boko Haram member who is ready to lay down his arms and repent, the door is open to such members.

“The key word that government has ever used is dialogue and that is dialogue with stakeholders and possibly repentant insurgents.

US First Lady Michelle Obama,in the weekly address today at the white house has described the Chibok abduction as Outrageous, she said it is a pattern of threats and intimidation to prevent young girls from pursuing their education.
She said she and her husband Barack Obama were "outraged and heartbroken" over the abduction on 14 April of more than 200 girls from their school.

She was speaking instead of her husband in the weekly presidential address.

Mrs Obama, who was speaking ahead of Mother's Day in the US on Sunday, said the girls reminded her and her husband of their own daughters.

"What happened in Nigeria was not an isolated incident. It's a story we see every day as girls around the world risk their lives to pursue their ambitions," she said.

She cited the case of Pakistani schoolgirl and campaigner Malala Yousafzai, who was shot and wounded by the Taliban for speaking out for girls' education.

"The courage and hope embodied by Malala and girls like her around the world should serve as a call to action," Mrs Obama said.

It is unusual for a US first lady to make outspoken foreign policy remarks, but Mrs Obama has campaigned for the girls' release.

Michelle Obama has often appeared on the weekly broadcast alongside her husband, but today she was seen making the speech alone for the first time.
